***************
Gender Equality Organization (GEO), a student organization at Florida Gulf Coast University, is dedicated to furthering the cause of gender and sexual equality in our society. In its first three years, GEO has organized high-profile events to raise awareness about violence against women, sexual harassment, and women’s health. Our largest events have been during the month of April, which is the nationally recognized Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
As part of this year’s efforts, GEO is bringing Eve Ensler’s award winning production, the “Vagina Monologues” to FGCU and the broader Fort Myers community! The Vagina Monologues is not just an edgy performance. It is a global movement, also known as “V-Day,” to stop violence against women and girls, as well as raise funds for organizations (local and global) working towards this admirable goal. Via the performances, we will be fundraising for Abuse Counseling and Treatment (ACT) and Human Trafficking Awareness Partnerships (HTAP), two local non-profit organizations that work to end violence against women. The V-Day movement is powerful and widespread. In 2009 there were over 4,000 productions of the Vagina Monologues , produced by volunteer activists in 120 countries around the world! We hope to successfully add to that number this year with three performances on the FGCU campus, next week.
Sponsored by: The College of Arts & Sciences and the Department of Social & Behavioral Studies
